Blast from the past

There comes a time in everyone's year where you realize the time has come. Whether that time is to sell the house or to mow the lawn doesn't matter. The time has come to do something you don't want to do but know it has to be done so you put on your big girl pants and dig in.

Then there are those things that are totally avoidable for long periods of time. They hide themselves in the deep dark recesses of the rarely accessed storage units like this one:

Inherited from Grandmother Burkhalter, a lovely piece that has served us well, it has a mirror, a matching armoir, and a bed frame - anyone interested?

Why would we be willing to part with such an heirloom you might ask?

It was a hard decision but, it seems we have been harboring relics from our past in such places to the point that we no longer even have the ability to enjoy them. Anyone know what to do with these? LOL! I don't know anyone who still owns a cassette player (except maybe Dad, but he has an 8-track player in his favorite car - Really!).

Yup, that's a karaoke tape, and a mix tape, a sermon tape, and many that make me very afraid, LOL.

Photography back then? You had to put this round cartridge in the back of the camera called film. You couldn't see any image until it was 'developed' which meant there were no 'do-overs.' Worse! There was no delete! Then you put all your developed images, without color correction in folders like this:

And backup was a nightmare. One day I feel sure I will have to explain to the up and coming generation just where the 'film strip edges' came from...

Until then. Me and my scanner are going to become friends and get all the stuff I want to keep in digital format. No doubt some 1990's pictures of Tim and I will warrant a blog post or two. ;)

CONGRATULATIONS Lizzy and Alex! We are happy to anounce, you won our contest for the Free Engagement Session. We decided just to pull a name from the hat and you came to the top!

Lizzy and Alex live and work here in Temple, Texas and are getting married in July. Our Engagement Story

Last week we asked you to share your stories with us for a chance to win a Free Engagement Session. That is not over! However, it was pointed out to us that we did not share our engagement story. Therefore, we decided we would share that with you today.

As it turns out it was not as easy as we thought! It requires focus, planing, and hysterical fits of laughter. We had a lot of fun as you can tell but the story is a bit silly so prepare yourself, we usually try to be more professional until people know us better, LOL. How to add a Pinterest Button on Blogger!

As you know everyone's new favorite thing is Pinterest. It should be, it is awesome! Tim is hooked, I however, am still waiting to be admitted to the inner circle. :/ We decided we really ~~wanted~~ needed a Pinterest button on our blog! The problem is, that Blogger doesn't have one of those cool little Pinterest buttons for the footer like they have buttons for Facebook and google+ ect. I have the utmost confidence that they will get it soon but until then I really didn't want to have to add a link to every post I make.

Well a few weeks ago I found learned how to put our contact, website, and home buttons at the bottom of every post using a 'Post Template.' I thought "Gee, I wonder if I could do that with a Pinterest button too." Turns out YOU CAN! very simply. (Check it out at the bottom to the left)

Want one?

1. Go to your blog posts

2. Look to the menu on the left, the last tab is Settings. Click!

3.The second tab down is Posts and comments. Click!

4. Under POSTS at the top are 3 options, the middle one is 'Post Template' and next to it 'Add.' Click!

5. Now copy this:

Wow what a weekend. We have been in the process of re-branding Tim Burkhalter Photography to include the both of us and we think it is super great. Hopefully, new clients will begin to understand just from the branding that two is better than one. Twice the opportunity to catch the once in a lifetime moments they are going to look at for the rest of their lives.

We have also changed the slide show on www.timburkhalterphotography.com to reflect our personality. Check it out and get to know us a little. It is of course a work in progress (just as we are :) but I thought you might like to look at what we have so far. It was sooooo cold the morning we took these pictures, and the blistering wind was constantly blowing through the tunnel so we were both bundled up. We had ball though like we always do, just being us (silly.) We picked out our personal faves for the main website and here are some of the ones that didn't make it,

Got Drama?

Tim and I attended an online workshop this weekend that was AMAZING! I learned a lot. Of course Tim already knew most all of it, but I needed practical experience. We took our most powerful flash and our portable flashes into the backyard to see what we (I) could do. It was a cloudy grey evening around 5:45 when we started shooting. The purpose was to get light on the subject while getting a dramatic sky in the background. The Problem: If you expose for the subject, the sky just looks white; if you expose for the sky, your subject it too dark to see. The trick: you have to have a pretty dark sky or a mega flash to overpower it. So this is our mega flash and the before and after:

The technical mumbo jumbo is to make your flash go one f--stop higher than the background or more. We used our camera meter to get the f-stop of the sky and a light meter to get the f-stop of the flash. We also wanted to see if the speedlight (baby flash) had enough power to overload the sky at that time so we trampled out into the yard to get that wilderness look. We had just enough power to pull this off:

Yes, I did just prove I am married to the most handsome man in the world.

Thankfully he thinks I'm cute too. I just wish he wouldn't get such a kick out of my transparent ears! LOL that was his favorite shot. I suppose I should be proud they have been passed down for generations. ;) (don't worry he won't do that to someone who pays him HA!)

The last 3 shots Tim showed me that light is so controllable you can even get studio pictures in the bright backyard; all these shots were taken minutes from each other. By the way. thanks for the hair pin April!

New Albums Are Here! (texas wedding photographer)

The wait is over, I am so excited to finally announce the coming of our new elite book! We have finally gotten our newest sample book and it looks AMAZING. Trust me even Tim's beautiful pictures don't do it justice. Now I know you want to see them both, (OK so I just want to show them off) give us a call or stop by and look. However, for those of you that are out of town, you can click to our new elite albums to see the vendor's pictures, all the features and a whole lot of options.

It comes in a box wrapped in a microfiber pouch.

The cover sparkles. It has a practically non-existant 1 mm gutter. The binding is flawless. This is a book for the ages.

We also ordered a new copy of our basic album that comes with our basic package because it continues to deliver superior results for a great price, you can't help but love it.

Best laid plans (texas wedding photographer)

Well, I messed up. Yup, that beautiful new book I was supposed to have is not here yet. Awww nuts. It seems that I needed to learn a lesson in how to make a book. The one Tim designed has been here for a week! It seems that there is a pit of despair in the middle of every spread of a book and you don't want Wesley to fall in. But be not afraid, the book publisher will email and tell you when you have let some one fall in. Unfortunately that will stop the process and delay your book. I was so sad when I realized some of my favorite spreads had a face in the middle. So I had to drop back and redesign those pages.

Furthermore, I was also caught by a phenomenon called Page bleed. Who knew? FYI if you design a book with a border on the page the publisher can't guarantee that the border will be the same all the way around. You see they print all the pages and then cut them. Consequently they cut off part of the border. So unless they get the image absolutely centered which is virtually impossible, your border will not be the same width all the way around. Therefor they email asking you to redesign which stops the process and delays your book. Instead, you bleed the images all the way to the edge, with no border so that they cut a hair of the image off and that is called page bleed. Boy does it hurt.

What's really sad is that the book will likely be here on Thursday or Friday but I really wanted to show it off tomorrow. Best laid plans go awry.

Learning the trade (texas wedding photographer)

We have been ordering new example albums! We decided I needed to learn how to build albums as well as Tim, and we have been considering a change in vendors, so some new examples were a perfect way to kill 2 birds with one stone. However, those proverbial birds would not go quietly.

In the past week I have built the same album somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 or 6 times and have used 4 different programs to do so. Now I think I know why Tim wants me to learn so bad, and why the album design services are so expensive. Albums are some serious hard work! I think the finished product will be extremely rewarding but... we don't have it yet. :( The new books should be here at the end of the week and I can not wait. It's driving me nuts! Maybe I can show them off next Monday.

In the mean time a funny story (well, funny to my family). I also decorate cakes occasionally, it is my family's trade. My mom taught me everything I know but she and I see things differently. I used to drive her crazy with what we affectionately called "vine-y thing-y's." In my opinion any cake with flowers needed vines! Sort of like this:

Needless to say that was not my mothers opinion (nor is it mine anymore). I felt she was squashing my creativity. Mom felt I was ruining her business. You know it was the standard mother-daughter teaching-of-the-trade argument. Back then it was not so funny, now it is a standard family joke. So what does this have to do with photography? As Tim was critiquing my designs I was arguing my creativity and he responded with "There's just too many 'vine-y thing-y's, OK!"

I guess it's just me! ;)

Happy New Year!!! Interestingly enough Tim Burkhalter Photography holds many new adventures for the new year especially for me (Emily).

We have decided that we are going to make this business a couple thing! I am super excited about it. I now have my own DSLR (that's a really supped up camera but I still don't know what the acronym is) and must tackle the daunting venture of learning how to use it. Thankfully I have my best friend as a teacher. I have shot with Tim on the last 3 sessions and I am in it for good. So far it has been a blast. However, my resolution to learn the technical side and get more good pictures than bad feels a bit more daunting than I would like it too. I do not doubt myself however, and I feel a new creative outlet coming on! Here are the 5 favorite shots from the last wedding that I actually took and what was going on at the time:

And after they left, the bides bouquet was just laying on their table, I didn't move a thing. Love that!

Tim and I love to be together and if all goes well this will be a great way to do just that. So, you will notice a few changes in the coming year like the banner at the top of the blog, and the "us" on the contact links. I am hoping to post my progress on Mondays. We are also planing to do a shoot for ourselves soon (since Tim doesn't have long hair and a beard anymore lol). A few other things are also in the works so be on the lookout, and friend me on facebook!

What could be better than a couple of high school sweethearts who then became Aggie sweethearts and met with me up in Waco for their engagement session on a day we saw rain for the first time in ages. Kati and Kane (texas wedding photographer)

I don't know about you, but when my wife wants to cheer me up or coax me into doing something that I seem to be having a hard time getting done she makes chocolate chip cookies. The bribe works every time. Cookies make everything better and even work well when a kid is a little timid...but let me warn of the sugar rush and fall. My last session was a prime example of the power of cookies and sugar.

Kati and Kane were ready to go at Kati's mom's historic home in Temple. It was a great place to start our session and Kane perked up after a little cookie.

Uh oh...here we go!

Best Friend Forever - Julie Anne (texas wedding photographer)

Ok, so I have a new BFF (best friend forever.) Her name is Julie Anne and we became friends right from the start the other day at her Moment in Time session. I had just given a hug to her mom, Jenny, and her grandparents, Tom and Julie, when Julie Anne gave me a present. We both now have matching rings. I told her that I was married and she said that it was ok cause we were just friends. That didn't stop me from trying to get a kiss from her the rest of the session. I'm telling you that if I was a little boy I would probably be chasing Julie Anne all over the place bugging the snot out of her just so she knew I liked her. You know how us boys are!

I also got to meet Owen her little brother who will definitely have to grow up big and strong to fend off the boys from his sister. He is amazing....when his eyes lit up I'm sure I saw straight into Heaven through them. And everyone knows how adorable a smile can be from a baby with hardly any teeth. What an adorable family. I had so much fun being apart of their life and I look forward to more time with them in the future as they grow up.

Belton Cotton Gin - Meghan

Meghan and her grandmother met me at Yettie Polk Park and I immediately said lets go downtown (Belton.) The light was just right for some wonderful textured walls. I'm also growing very fond of finding open doors to magical worlds that can only be found in downtown buildings. Everything was just wonderful.

As we were shooting I kept saying to myself, "I know this face." Meghan has such an exquisite natural beauty to her. My camera was just falling in love with Meghan the more we shot.

A very dear friend, Robert, from church is turning an old cotton gin here in downtown Belton into a steak house. I've been drooling (no not for steak) to take pictures in that building before it has been turned into a restaurant. We were taking pictures right outside when I heard Robert's voice ask if I we wanted to shoot inside. Like a kid outside a toy store I said, "YES, YES, Uh HUH, YES PLEASE." Then I gave him a great big hug. I'm sure Robert had no idea that I would take as long as I could to shoot in that incredible location. Especially with such beautiful young lady. As we were leaving I gave him another great big hug and showed him a few pics. Robert, thank you thank you thank you!

When I got home Emily (wife) wanted to see the images and she immediately said, "Audrey Hepburn." I knew I knew her face. Emily was exactly right. Meghan has that simple elegant beauty that Audrey Hepburn had. Now my camera wasn't the only one falling in love, Emily and I were falling head over heals too. Meghan, you are so beautiful...thank you for sharing it with me and my camera.

Round Rock, Texas: Lauren House

Ok, so I've known Lauren since she was a little girl with the most adorable short curly hair you can imagine. Next thing I know I'm getting a call from her mom to shoot her senior pictures. "What, she's a senior? When did that happen?" Yup, she's a senior at Round Rock High School and a varsity cheer leader.

I guess I've entered that age where you can't believe how time can move so fast. I turn 35 this year and Lauren is a senior - man what happened? A small voice in my head (no I don't hear voices - very often ; ) told me exactly what happened. "Tim, you grew up and now you're a photographer, a teacher, and Lauren is a beautiful young woman who IS a senior in high school." All I can say is WOW and I bet that is what you will say when you see Lauren's pictures. WOW is she gorgeous young woman! Lauren, have a wonderful senior year. I'm still scratching my head wondering where that little girl went.

The Inn at Salado - Amanda and Woody

I was so happy when Amanda's mom, Nancy, called to talk with me about photographing Amanda and Woody's wedding. A week later we met and sat on the floor of my living room and talked for hours about Woody and their wedding day.

I met Amanda several years ago when Emily and I were leaders of her small group at church camp. Now she is all grown up and every bit as full of Life as she was at camp. I loved hearing about Woody and their time together as a couple.

The day started out with a brides brunch at Adelea's on Main in Salado, Texas. During the brunch Amanda received a call from a very dear friend who is stationed Armenia with the Peace Corp. It was an emotional moment as he took the time to let her know how much he loved her and how much he wished he could be there. Then another call came that Amanda's cousin had just delivered a healthy baby who's name was Emma. After a few tears things settled down and the ladies talked and laughed, opened gifts, prayed, and had a really good meal. Not a bad start to such a wonderful day!

About an hour later we were all at The Inn at Salado where the wedding was going to be. Preparations were already well under way for the day and you could tell it was going to be beautiful. The details were coming together and the florals were just amazing.

Amanda's headdress and bouquet were made by Carol Giesbers at Oh Happy Day Weddings. I loved the skeleton keys for the Secret Garden theme. What a great touch.

Woody and Amanda were booked in an adorable cottage for their wedding night there and chose to see each other before the wedding for a First Look. They got to spend some time away from all the busyness to just soak each other up and take in everything together. Amanda was able to show Woody her grandmother's ring that had been fashioned into a gorgeous necklace so grandmother (who is in Heaven) could be there close to her heart. Such a sweet moment as she told Woody about it all.

We then got busy taking the formals and having some fun with the bridal party.

The rest of the evening was just spectacular as people talked, dear friends laughed, celebrated, and danced the night away.

Amanda and Woody's first dance was accompanied by Jacob Trevino, a dear friend of Amanda's and the son of one of her dad's closest friends. The mood was just right for their first dance as husband and wife. Very intimate!

Congratulations Amanda and Woody. Thank you for choosing to include me in your wedding day!

Moment in Time - Jeryka (texas wedding photographer)

If you want to meet a risk-taker this is your girl. Jeryka loves motocross, is going into the Navy, and is jaw-dropping gorgeous. Our session was around 9am and it was already really really hot. Being a risk-taker myself, I asked if she would be willing to do a "Trash the Dress" session. I don't think we trashed the dress (that's a good thing) but we sure did have a lot of fun together and we were so much cooler in the water. At the end of the session Jeryka and her mom, Cristi, had some fun in the water park and we got some images that remind me a little of Marilyn Monroe. Great times in the heat and great images of a woman about to make a lot of Navy men really croon.

Julie and Tom in the Heat of the Moment (texas wedding photographer)

Julie is one of the most precious ladies I work with at school. She is our librarian and a very good one at that. She has been there for me as a client for a couple years now and I've grown so much because of her loyalty. Julie has always been a shoulder to lean on when things get frustrating - she is my sister in Christ and always seems to know what to say or when to just listen. I love her for that and much more.

I met Julie and Tom at our church during the sweltering heat of the day and their beauty came through in showers of affection for each other. I have to admit that I'm not sure whether the heat was from the time of day or from the love they have cultivated over time, but it was hot.

Here's to Love that grows moment by moment for years and displays itself in admirable ways!

My Sweet Ana Rosa (texas wedding photographer)

Howdy everyone, I would like you to meet Ana Rosa. She is from Honduras and lives in a city with her mother, father, and two siblings. Rosa is 4 years old, likes to sing, color, and play. Her favorite meal is spaghetti and her birthday is either January 28 or March 25 (she told her tutor it was March 25 in a letter, but the information I got was January 28.) I guess I'll just have to celebrate her birthday twice a year.

I am her sponsor through Compassion International and this is my first child to sponsor. I haven't done a very good job thus far, but I want to do better. This is a start and I pray that I will be diligent in including her in my life. I love children as most of you know. I teach music to over 400 children a day at an elementary school and love photographing families (especially children) in my Moment in Time sessions.

I was thinking you could help me out in staying on top of my inclusion of Rosa into my life by sending little notes yourself to her in the comments. I will write them on 3x5 cards and send them to her in my next letter. Thanks for you love and support for sweet Rosa!

Carroll Family 2010 (texas wedding photographer)

It was hot, like 97 degrees hot, and humid, like 80% humidity, but through it all the Carroll family and I had a blast at the Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum Depot. Johnny is an ~~old~~ former school buddy of mine. We played football together in Jr. High and a little in High School before I switched to soccer. He is now a coach and married to Terrie an elementary school teacher. Her mom, Verna, lives here in Temple so we were able to meet up with her to start things off.

Johnny and Terrie have two very energetic boys Joshua (age 9) and Caleb (age 4). The boys and I hit it off right from the start and I could tell that the boy inside me had just found two new friends. We were going to have a great time!

Joshua is a 20 questions in one minute type guy and I totally remember being that way with my dad. One of my favorite parts of our time together was at one point he just came up and gave me a big hug. Gotta love that! Joshua is a brain on sugar overload...he loves science, computers, games, (my favorite) Lego's, and Star Wars. My favorite part of Joshua is his energetic jump right in with you (even though I just met ya) personality...if I'm right, I bet he has never met a stranger. Truly a Texan through and through!

Caleb wasn't a talker, but a doer. Just like me when his attention is on something, he doesn't hear a thing (might get him in a lot of trouble with his wife one day...I'm just sayin'). He is the climb everything in site type of guy and I'm sure he is the king of the jungle gym at his school. He is fearless, sure footed, and quick. My favorite part of Caleb is his joy in just being in the moment. Whether its focused on the dismembered leg of a grasshopper, snuggling in the lap of Grandma, or climbing to the top of a train he is in hog heaven.

I Can't Love You Enough - For Blue Eyes

Today marks 12 years of being smitten with the same girl. Inside my wedding ring it says "You complete me. May 30, 1998," but the truth is that I am still being completed by her. She is the one thing in this world I cannot seem to get enough of. Everything else gets old and tiresome, but not Emily. I am very thankful that for 12 years that I am still the boy in love with the girl who had become my best friend during some of the darkest moments of my life. She has always been there through the best of times, worst of times, silliest of times, and wiliest of times - she is still here through it all and I love her.

Emily, I am happy that I can't love you enough and I'll admit for one day "that I am the willy one."

Abandoned: Allyssa

It is a beautiful, ~~warm~~ hot, Sunday evening and you are having a fun photo shoot in downtown Belton, Texas. The streets are deserted and you have the place to yourself. Next thing you know mom, that is Sheri, has found the door to amazing and someone has left it unlocked. Thus we enter the studio for Allyssa's Moment in Time Senior Session. Allyssa is graduating in a couple of weeks and wants to be a filmmaker. So as we enter this "studio for a day" our two creative visual minds start ~~flowing as all creative professionals would~~ jumping up and down like children at the ice cream counter. Yes, you know, the counter with all 999gazillion flavors just screaming to be experienced. Needless to say, by the end our creative tummies were full and this is what came from our visual binge. When the door is open you gotta go in - I'm just sayin'!
